Refuse Cart Program:
Groot provides each residence with a refuse cart. Bags or disposable containers of refuse that do not fit in the refuse cart may be placed next to the refuse cart for collection. Residents may contact Groot to request a different sized cart. There is no charge for the initial cart size change. Any additional changes of cart size will cost $25 each.
Refuse Collection Program:
Refuse is collected once per week.
Changes to Solid Waste Collection Days:
The Village will be divided into 4 quadrants for collection. Refuse, recycling and landscape waste will all be collected on the same day.
Recycling Cart Program:
Unlimited recycling service is provided. Each household will received (1) 65-gallon cart unless a smaller or larger cart is ordered by calling Groot for no charge. All recyclables may be mixed together in the cart provided to you, no sorting is needed. Do not put recyclables in plastic bags.

Backdoor Service:
Back door collection is an option and offers a number of advantages, residents do not have to carry the refuse to the street. Back door service does not apply to landscape waste collection. Call Groot to subscribe to back door service at 800-244-1977.
*NEW* Electronics Waste Collection - "e-waste":
Certain electronic items are prohibited from being disposed of in landfills. Groot will collect up to two electronic items from the curb at each household per week at no additional fee. Cathode-ray tube (CRT) televisions in excess of 50 pounds will require an additional charge. Contact Groot to schedule a curbside electronics collection.

Bulk
Items:
Unlimited Bulk Items such as Furniture (couch, dresser, chair) Mattress and box spring,
lawn mower, bicycle, grill etc.
Construction Demolition Debris:
Up to 1 cubic yard (3' x 3' x 3') of miscellaneous debris or
construction material will be collected each week at no additional charge. Construction type debris should be
stacked or bundled in lengths no longer than 4 feet and no larger than 2 feet in diameter.
- Carpeting should be in rolls no longer than 4 feet long and two feet in diameter and taped.
- In general try and keep any loose material bundled and neat so we can pick up.
- Stone, concrete, and dirt can only be picked up in containers and cannot weigh more than 45lbs. per container.
- If more than 1 cubic yard please call Groot to arrange pickup. Additional charges apply.
Special pick-ups and extra garbage:
If you find you need extra rubbish picked up on a day other
than your normal service day or you have more than 1 cubic yard of construction type debris there will be an extra
charge.
Oversized/Overweight Items:
Some items are just too big or heavy for our people to handle
without special equipment, in that case your driver may have to leave it so special arrangements can be made. In
this event special charges will apply. Please call and check first if you think what you have placed out falls in
this category.
Landscape Waste/Food Scrap
Subscription Program:
Arlington Heights residents may now participate in food waste composting by subscribing to the new 95 or 65 gallon landscape subscription program.
- Residents must subscribe for service.
- Food scraps may only be placed inside the cart.
- No food scrap material is permitted in paper landscape bags.
- Landscape outside of carts must be stickered.
- Subscriptions cannot be prorated.
- Between Oct 14th – Dec 13th, up to 10 unstickered landscape bags or bundles may be placed at the curbside next to the cart.

Landscape Sticker Program:
Residents can purchase landscape waste stickers from local retailers and apply the stickers to bags or bundles of landscape waste. Fall Leaves 2:1 Program - October 14th through December 13th, residents need only place 1 sticker for every 2 bags of leaves set out for collection. The list of stores selling stickers can be seen below.
Free Spring Bag/Bundle Collection:
On the third landscape waste collection day in April, Groot will collect from each household, five unstickered landscape waste bags or bundles.
Landscape Waste Subscription Program:
Residents may subscribe to the program which allows five (5) unstickered bags or bundles per week Apr 1st – Oct 11th. Fall collection from Oct 14th – Dec 13th allows ten (10) unstickered bags or bundles per week at the curbside for collection. Food scraps are NOT permitted with base subscription program.

Leaves and grass clippings must be placed in two-ply, 30 gallon, Kraft type paper bags and bags must not weigh more than 50 pounds each. Yard waste in plastic bags will NOT be collected. Plastic tape and silver duct tape must not be used to close the bag because it will not decompose in the compost. Brush and small limbs must be tied into bundles with twine or string and may not exceed 4 feet in length, 2 feet in diameter, or 50 pounds. Each bundle must have a sticker on them if using the bag and tag method. Logs greater than 6 inches do not require a sticker and should be disposed of with garbage; there is a 1 cubic yard limit.
Grass clippings, leaves, twigs, garden debris, weeds, fruits, seeds, stalks, vines are acceptable landscape items. Landscape does not include wood timbers, plastic edging, plant pots or trays, fertilizer or landscape material bags, landscape fabric, root sections, sand, gravel, sod, firewood, rocks, wood chips, bark, excess amounts of dirt or animal waste.
Christmas trees will be collected on your regular collection day from January 2 through January 14. Stickers are not necessary for Christmas trees.
Senior Citizens Discount:
Single-family households where the head of the household is age 65 or older are eligible for a discounted collection rate. This discount does not apply to landscape waste stickers, the landscape waste subscription programs, or the Special Collection rates. Go to vah.com and look under Village Services, then Refuse, Recycling & Landscape Waste for the discount application. Or contact the Arlington Heights Senior Center at 847-253-5532 for application details or visit 1801 W. Central Rd. with your driver’s license or state ID and Groot bill . The discount will begin the next Groot billing cycle following completion and approval of the application. If a senior household is currently registered for the discount, it is not necessary to re-apply. AH Senior Center hours: Monday through Friday 8:30-4:30.
Active Military Discount:
The discount is available for residences with a family member that normally lives in the home and is in full-time military service or is a Guard/ Reservist that is actively deployed. Village staff will process applications for the discount, which will require each resident to provide an active government issued common access card (CAC), orders of deployment or letter from Command for verification, and will inform Groot when households are to begin receiving the discount. Discounts are to begin at the start of the first three-month billing period following the approval by the Village. White Goods/Appliances:
State law requires us to collect any white good type of appliance such
as refrigerators, ovens; washers etc. separately and recycle them. Appliances are picked up on Mondays at no charge
to residents. Please call Groot 24 hours in advance to schedule a pick up.
Vacation Policy:
Residents are required to notify Groot prior to going on vacation. There is
a 30 day minimum and no maximum (within one calendar year) in order to receive a
credit. Residents must supply a start and return date prior to their departure. Any balance must be
paid in full before vacation status is applied. Credit will be applied upon return. No
credit will be issued if Groot is notified after the fact.
Discount Programs:
If your household income is less than $16,000 per year, persons with
disabilities and those over 65 years old are eligible for a discount. This discount does not apply to landscape
waste stickers, the landscape waste subscription programs, or the Special Collection rate. Contact the Village's
Disability Services Coordinator at 847-368-5793 for more information and an application.
